Confusingly, Southgate is not in South London. Southgate is a suburban area in North London, in the London Borough of Enfield, about 8 miles from Charing Cross, in Zone 4. The area provides an abundance of green space such as Grovelands Park or Broomfield Park, which entail lots of entertainment and leisure options from golf, bowling, basketball courts, boating ponds, equestrian and hockey centres, and concerts or festivals. 

It’s a suburban area, with a feel of being a town of its own. It offers a variety of housing, often on wide tree lined streets, and is full of attractive Thirties buildings. Even the tube station itself, designed by modernist architect Charles Holden, is an architectural delight, looking like a spaceship.

With great access to green space, fantastic transport links (with around 30 minutes by tube to central London), and good school options, Southgate is an attractive area for families and young professionals. Mainly terraced housing can be found here, as well as plenty of detached and semi-detached properties. Dotted around the area, you will also be able to find flats, maisonettes, and bungalows on offer, often for very reasonable prices.

Substantial Cypriot and Jewish communities live here, it’s quiet and safe and a large percentage of its residents are children. Southgate offers wide options for relatively good value family homes with an array of local amenities. It’s located in the catchment area of some of the finest schools in the UK such as the independent Palmers Green High School for Girls, Salcombe Preparatory School, and the Keble Preparatory School for Boys. Nevertheless, the local state schools also offer an excellent education to local kids and have been rated as Good or Outstanding in recent Ofsted reports.

From an entertainment perspective, The Broadway is the place for multi-cultural dining, where you might even spot a couple of famous faces, from tapas to Lebanese, Steakhouses or Italian. There is some nightlife here, more in the shape of sports bars and country pubs rather than nightclubs. Retail shops are predominantly based in and around The Green and The Broadway.
